A minimum viable product (MVP) is the smallest version of your app that solves a real problem for real users. Done well, it tells you whether the idea works before you invest in everything else.
1. Start with one problem
Write down, in one sentence, the problem your app solves and for whom. If you need several sentences, the scope is probably too broad for an MVP.
2. Map the core journey
List the steps a user takes from opening the app to getting value. Every feature in your MVP should support that journey. Everything else goes on a “later” list.
3. Choose the platform deliberately
- Know where your users are: Android, iOS, or both.
- Cross-platform frameworks can reduce cost for many business apps.
- Native development may be better for heavy device features or demanding performance.
4. Plan the backend and admin side
Most apps need more than screens: user accounts, a database, notifications and an admin panel to manage content or orders. Include these in your plan from the start so the estimate is realistic.
5. Define how you'll measure success
Decide what tells you the MVP is working: sign-ups, repeat usage, orders or feedback. Add basic analytics so you can learn from real behaviour.
6. Prepare for launch
Play Store and App Store submissions have their own requirements, including privacy details, screenshots and review timelines. Leave room for them in your schedule.
